Let the holiday freak-out begin

Thanksgiving can’t possibly be next week.

I mean, we still have Halloween candy! There are remnants of jack-o-lanterns outside and many many leaves to be raked. What in the world happened to November and how will I ever pack 4 people and drive several states away just one week from tomorrow?

To state the obvious, I am in full on holiday denial panic and I am not quite sure what to do with myself. The kids only have two more days of school this week and on Monday we have a holiday party before they break for Thanksgiving. I really am excited. But what about our overdue library books? What about the un-vacuumed floor and all those toys in the playroom that need to be put away? Again! Do you even know what I signed up to bring to the Preschool Thanksgiving feast?

Baby Carrots. Y’all. It has come to baby carrots.

This is the first year I am truly feeling the holiday pressure. I have so many things I want to do, but today I am feeling totally overwhelmed. Pinterest crafts? Forget it. I haven’t even opened Pinterest for days. The boys have been bringing fall artwork home for weeks and I just really don’t know what to do with it. I want to display it everywhere, but seriously. I am out of room.

I finally realized it’s time to hit the “pause” button.

Tonight, I am taking a step back. Yes, I am backing awayyyy from the Christmas tree pictures I keep seeing on Facebook. I am no longer going to worry about the half-built hexbug tracks that have been in my livingroom for a week or even cry over the fact that we go through a box of cereal in two days and what we have left may or may not be enough for breakfast in the morning.

Tonight, I am going to sit here for five minutes and say thank you for this home and this mess. I am going to sneak into my boys rooms, tiptoe around the Angry Birds and the blocks, cover them up and kiss their heads. I am going to remember that the things I am truly thankful for are love, family, and community.

The rest can wait til tomorrow.
